The Relevance of Silver in Argentina

One of the ten most significant yet undeveloped silver ventures in Latin America is the "Diablillos" project, located in the province of Salta, Argentina. This fact clearly highlights the country's great potential as a producer of a precious metal whose value, between 2021 and the end of 2024, ranged from $20 to $30 per ounce, peaking at $35 during periods of uncertainty. However, beyond its traditional use as a store of value, silver's importance has significantly grown as a strategic resource, being key in the manufacturing of electronic components and industrial products, especially in the automotive sector and renewable energies. In this context, Argentina, recognized globally, renews its opportunities for those willing to invest in the precious metal that inspired the country's name.
Ranked tenth globally among silver producers, Argentina's mining activities are concentrated in the provinces of Jujuy, Catamarca, Salta, Chubut, and Santa Cruz. Mines such as "Manantial Espejo" and "Cerro Moro" in Santa Cruz exemplify the interest of major foreign investors in Argentina's silver potential. In a market where Mexico and China lead, overtaking traditional powers such as Chile, Peru, and the United States, Argentina?s annual production hovers around 1,100 tons, representing 4% of global output. Driven by the energy and technological transition, the value of Argentina's silver exports grew in 2024, even though local production did not show a significant increase. To boost the development of deposits, the main challenge remains overcoming regulations that limit their exploitation.
Since the enactment of the Mining Investment Law in the 1990s, silver has become established as both a primary and secondary production, with annual volumes significantly increasing. Looking ahead, experts highlight key projects such as "Diablillos" in Salta and "Providencia" in Jujuy, where silver is combined with gold and copper. To support the development of these deposits, factors such as infrastructure, technology, and environmental protection will be decisive in enhancing Argentina's competitiveness in the global market. With new challenges and opportunities, silver remains a viable bet for those planning sustainable mining.
